about

The origins of “Deep Side” can be traced to a viral video of Divine Sweater recording the song in the studio that amassed over 2.3 million views and even earned a comment from Kevin Bacon. Since that video, the song has become a core staple of the band’s live set, with fans recognizing the song despite it not yet being released. Lyrically, “Deep Side” is Divine Sweater’s infatuation anthem. The song captures the rush of realizing you are in way over your head with a new crush, a feeling akin to treading water in the deep end of the pool. The lyrics spiral out into a romanticized analysis of molecules and particles, returning obsessively back to one central question: “How come I can’t get you alone?” It all adds up to two minutes and twenty eight seconds of pure euphoric delusion.

lyrics

We're too deep in the deep side
It's so hard in the daylight
To be deep in a deep slide

Yeah yeah
How come I can't get you alone?
Yeah yeah
How come I just want you alone?
How come I just need you alone?
All I think of when I'm walking home

Million different particles not under control
I am a million different particles under your control
And it's the last thing people will respect of you
And it's the first thing people will expect of you
You are a million different particles don't open the door
I have a million different particles right under the floor
And it's the same thing people will resent

Too deep in the deep side
Too strong for the weak mind
Too pure to be satisfied
Too long for the daylight
To have you in my mind
Where you always will reside
It's deep for a deep sigh

Yeah yeah
How come I can't get you alone?
Yeah yeah
How come I just want you alone?
How come I just need you alone?
All I think of when I'm walking home

Million different molecules not under control
You are a million different particles now pick up the phone
And it's the first thing people will expect of you
And it's the first thing people will resent

Too deep in the deep side
Too strong for the weak mind
Too late to be satisfied
It's so long to the daylight
Maybe this is goodbye
Maybe this is goodbye
Maybe this is goodbye
